Apple – The New King In Global Smartphone Sales!

After three consecutive years of winning the top position, Samsung has been dethroned by iPhone maker Apple as the biggest smartphone maker in the world. The results have been announced by research firm Gartner.

However, throughout the entire year, Samsung had been holding the top slot. Gartner said that the U.S.-based company has garnered a 20.4 per cent share of the global smartphone market as more than 367.48 million units were being shipped in the October-December 2014 quarter. Though Samsung has 24.4 per cent share in the third quarter of 2014, its share declined to 19.9 per cent in the last quarter as only 73.03 million smartphones were shipped at that time.

Samsung is still struggling to cope up with its declining share in the smartphone market. Apple has dominated the premium phone market and Chinese companies are offering more and more high-quality hardware at lower prices. So Samsung has to secure its niche in the high-end section of the market through a strong ecosystem of apps, content and services. In 2014, total 1.2 billion units of smartphones have been shipped, which is 28.4 per cent more than 2013 numbers.

Lenovo (along with Motorola sales) has 6.6 per cent share, Huawei has 5.5 per cent and Xiaomi has 5.1 per cent share in the last quarter of 2014. Huawei and Xiaomi are faring well in Chinese markets, from the mid to low-end segment.
